These are some of the Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody — through medical neglect, beatings, hunger strike, or causes Israel has not disclosed. This is a partial list of the better-documented cases; each entry links to the sources that document it.

Walid Khaled Abdullah Ahmad

A 17-year-old — the first Palestinian minor to die in Israeli detention. An autopsy attended by an Israeli physician found he likely died of starvation and prolonged malnutrition; an Israeli judge later said he was 'likely starved' while closing the case.

Adnan al-Bursh

A leading Gaza orthopaedic surgeon, head of orthopaedics at al-Shifa Hospital. He died shortly after transfer to Ofer; the Israel Prison Service confirmed the death but withheld the cause. The UN Special Rapporteur on health said the case raises serious concerns he died following torture and demanded an independent investigation.

A Palestinian writer, imprisoned for 38 years. He died of complications from myelofibrosis, a bone-marrow cancer diagnosed in custody. Amnesty International documented years of inadequate medical care, saying that denying prisoners treatment may amount to torture.

Mohammed Ahmed al-Sabar

He had a congenital intestinal condition that required medication and a special diet. Palestinian rights bodies say he was denied this treatment during his detention, and he died after being moved from Ofer to Hadassah hospital — a death they attribute to deliberate medical neglect.

Thaer Abu Asab

According to fellow detainees' testimonies gathered by B'Tselem, guards stormed his cell at Ketziot and beat the inmates, striking him hardest; he was left unresponsive without medical help. An autopsy found signs of severe violence, and 19 guards were questioned over the death.

Iyad al-Rantisi

A Gaza obstetrician who headed the maternity department at Kamal Adwan Hospital. Detained while evacuating south, he died about six days later in a Shin Bet interrogation facility. Israel imposed a gag order and his death only became public in mid-2024.

Abd al-Rahman Mar'i

Omar Hamza Daraghmeh

Israel attributed his death at Megiddo, two weeks into administrative detention, to a sudden health crisis. The Palestinian Detainees' Affairs Commission said the account was 'subject to doubt' — he had appeared healthy at a court hearing that day — and Hamas alleged he was killed under torture.

Nasser Abu Hamid
